STEM U-Link

So on Saturday I went to Richmond, VA for a STEM outreach event hosted by the Richmond Professional chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers at Virginia Union University (all the outreach events be in Richmond!). It was great! It was nice interacting with the community and telling students and their parents more about STEM and engineering specifically at VCU. What was also nice was that I was reunited with members of my undergrad chapter NSBE @ VCU. Being a former President it's so heartwarming to see them continue to do great things. It makes me feel accomplished that...Read More

Stremessterful

So you're probably wondering "what's with the title" right? Well I couldn't chose between "Stressed" or "Stressful Semester" or "Semester Over" or anything of the sort so I figured I'd just mashed everything together and entitle this blog post that. Anywho, did you miss me?! Well I hope you did. I miss blogging. I haven't done so since the semester started. Actually I've barely done anything not academic related this semester that's how demanding it was. Ok so that's a bit of an exaggeration but I think you're getting my point. I am beyond ecstatic that this semester is over. So here's...Read More

GEM Conference 2014

So this blog post is about 2 weeks overdue but nevertheless here it is! On August 13th I departed Baltimore-Washington International Airport for the flight of my life: I WAS GOING TO CALIFORNIA! San Diego more specifically for the 2014 Annual GEM Conference. I had never been to the west coast so I was more than excited to attend this conference. But unlike the conferences I've attended most recently I was actually able to LEARN again which is always exciting. What is GEM you may ask? The National GEM Consortium's mission is: The mission of The National GEM Consortium is...Read More

Community Outreach

So I was blessed with even more opportunities to give back to the community and teach 6-12th graders about STEM, the role it plays in their every day lives, and how they too can make a difference in the world of STEM. The first event was actually a Career Day at Wilder Middle School in Richmond, VA. The students were tasked to go to at least three of the booths (one being the one my friend and I was running) and ask the people at the booths about their profession and what they did to be successful in their careers....Read More

STEM Explosion

For the entire month of June I've been blessed with the opportunity to help my alma mater (VCU) make a difference within the Richmond community. The School of Engineering held the Discocvery Camp, a week long engineering camp for middle school children, where students came in and learned about different aspects of engineering. My role in this "explosion" was to prepare the materials the kids would be working with and then help the students understand the concepts of what they were creating. On Tuesday, we worked with solar cells. Who knew you could make solar cells with fruit?! Either way...Read More
