On Friday, February 21, 2014, I went to volunteer at Cale Elementary as usual. This time however, I was more than just simply helping the kids understand their math or reading assignments. In honor of Engineer’s Week I decided to teach the kids about engineering! I know when I was in 3rd grade I had NO IDEA what an engineer was. I felt that it was my duty to pass along the basic knowledge of what I’ve acquired over the years.
I created a Powerpoint presentation about what engineering is. While I listed various type of engineering, I gave more details about Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil, Chemical, Biomedical, and Electrical engineering disciplines. They had lots of questions. Following the presentation I gave them the worksheet below.
A lot of them got Chemical and Biomedical confused but nevertheless were eager to finish the worksheet.
I was very happy how this day went. One of the little girls even said she “might want to be an engineer one day”. And that’s all it takes; changing the world one person at a time. One of the teachers that I work with took some photos of the experience as well!
