Into the Future

On Friday, November 18th I had the pleasure to visit the White House to be apart of a conversation on "Advancing Postsecondary Diversity and Inclusion". This was an all day event that included university reps from students to presidents, and staff of the department of education. I found out about the opportunity through my involvement with the National Society of Black Engineers and it was a great opportunity for the NSBE members in attendance as well as the other students who I met and quickly bonded with during the convening. The day started out with three panel sessions: Leadership Reflections:...Read More

STEM Teaching at Mount Sinai

This summer I was afforded the opportunity to teach 7 rising 3rd and 4th graders in the realm of STEM. As I am preparing for my new reality of being an instructor of record upon my start at Virginia Tech, this was a great opportunity for me to truly test out my independent teaching skills. Throughout the summer I made sure that the students brushed up on their math skills and introduced them to some concepts that they could possibly see in their new grade in the fall. Upon the completion of those lessons, the students then moved into building a robotic arm...Read More

Community Outreach

So I was blessed with even more opportunities to give back to the community and teach 6-12th graders about STEM, the role it plays in their every day lives, and how they too can make a difference in the world of STEM. The first event was actually a Career Day at Wilder Middle School in Richmond, VA. The students were tasked to go to at least three of the booths (one being the one my friend and I was running) and ask the people at the booths about their profession and what they did to be successful in their careers....Read More

STEM Explosion

For the entire month of June I've been blessed with the opportunity to help my alma mater (VCU) make a difference within the Richmond community. The School of Engineering held the Discocvery Camp, a week long engineering camp for middle school children, where students came in and learned about different aspects of engineering. My role in this "explosion" was to prepare the materials the kids would be working with and then help the students understand the concepts of what they were creating. On Tuesday, we worked with solar cells. Who knew you could make solar cells with fruit?! Either way...Read More

E-Week at Cale Elementary

On Friday, February 21, 2014, I went to volunteer at Cale Elementary as usual. This time however, I was more than just simply helping the kids understand their math or reading assignments. In honor of Engineer's Week I decided to teach the kids about engineering! I know when I was in 3rd grade I had NO IDEA what an engineer was. I felt that it was my duty to pass along the basic knowledge of what I've acquired over the years. I created a Powerpoint presentation about what engineering is. While I listed various type of engineering, I gave more...Read More
